Once every school year the Garretson School District recognizes a teacher for their outstanding contribution to the students. This year the award goes to Mrs. Bev Howe.

Mrs. Howe has been teaching for over 30 years at Garretson.

“My interest in working with kids, coaching, my family, former teachers and a love for science inspired me to the path of education," stated Howe.

Not only has she been teaching for Garretson but she has also been coaching track for 25 years and recently started coaching basketball and cross country. Through coaching the basketball team she used to play for, she is able to give back the love she has for the sport.

“When I decided to go into education I knew that I wanted to coach. I have been involved in sports my whole life so it seemed natural to me. I have coached for over 30 years and have enjoyed the opportunity to work with kids and other coaches,” stated Mrs. Howe.

Because Mrs. Howe has been with the Garretson School District for such a long time she became a big part of it and has made a big impact on many students' lives.

“It is truly an honor to be recognized by the people you work with as Teacher of the Year. I love coming to school every day and enjoy teaching the kids and working with the GHS staff,” said Howe.

Mrs. Howe graduated from SDSU with a major in Biology and a minor in Physical Education and took some additional summer courses in Chemistry, Physics, and Math. Before Mrs. Howe came to Garretson, she taught one year in Sherburn, Minnesota and 5 years in Chester. She is currently teaching chemistry, physics, consumer math and trigonometry.

Mrs. Howe is very loved by all of her students, one of them being junior Sydney Olson.

“She is very deserving of that award. She is a nice person and a good teacher and I think other students can agree that you can go to talk to her also about other stuff than chemistry," stated Olson, who is also one of the players Mrs. Howe coaches. “She is really down to earth and has the best interest in every kid and that makes her different from other teachers.”

Through her years of experience Mrs. Howe has gained a lot of wisdom and not only inspires students but also new teachers.

“My advice to new teachers is to keep at it. Those first years are hard work but stay positive and know that what you do each day to inspire kids is worth it,” said Howe.

Within all the years Mrs. Howe has been teaching for Garretson she has made a big impact on many students and teachers' lives, and the Garretson School District is very lucky to have her.
