Spring sports in full swing

Spring has finally arrived and so have Garretson’s spring sports! Golf, baseball, trapshooting, and track and field have all begun their seasons and have become the talk of the school. Although, with the dramatically fluctuating weather occurring recently, many practices and meets/games have been postponed or canceled.

Track and Field

On Thursday, April 15, the Blue Dragons traveled to Lennox for a track meet. Last Saturday, however, the track and field team held the meet at home.

The previous track meet, which was intended to be on April 13, was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

“The weather hasn’t been the best for practice or meets. We’ve had two meets postponed or canceled already and the practices have been cold and wet,” said senior track member Molly Hulscher.

Still, Hulscher seemed to be thrilled about track and field starting again, stating, “The last track meet for me went well! I finished 1st in discus and 4th in shot put so that’s always a great way to start a season! I think it was just good for everyone to get back in the track meet groove but we were all a little happy that we got rained out at West Central.”

Golf

In addition to track and field, golf has begun its season. The golfers opened their year with the Lakeview course in Mitchell Friday, April 9. Their first varsity meet in Chester, originally scheduled for April 20, was postponed to April 22 at 10:00 a.m.

“Practice has been going good,” stated senior golfer Rave Uhlich. “We’ve got holes in when we can to get a full tee-to-green practice in.”

When asked about the first meet, Uhlich answered: “I’d say it was pretty successful. Lakeview in Mitchell is a tough course to open the year with, but we were still able to put up some good scores. Peyton Hove and I both placed, so we had one boy and one girl.

“Our boys team finished in fourth place, but we were only 6 strokes off placing as a team, which is great since we only have two returning varsity players. I have high hopes for this season after last Friday.

“We’ve had a few practices that have been limited to the practice green, which is a great area to get practice in, but you also need some practice on the driving range as well. For the most part, we’ve just played holes in the cold and wind and just dealt with the weather, but I’m hoping it shapes up soon because golf is always nicer when it’s warm,” said Uhlich, concerning the impact the recent weather has had on golf.

Trapshooting

Trapshooting was first introduced to Garretson High School and Middle School in the spring of 2017. This season started on April 5, and these last two weeks have been specifically for practice. Scoring begins next week.

Zachary Uhl, a sophomore who participates in trapshooting, discussed the practices with the Blue Ink staff. “The last two practices were pretty rough as far as scores go. Not only that we are trying to get back into the groove of things, but it’s been extremely windy which causes the clay pigeons to ‘bounce’ or wobble. When this happens, the clay pigeon is extremely hard to hit.”

Baseball

The last baseball games were against Baltic on April 12 and versus Flandreau on April 18. Garretson came away with the 15-9 victory in a cold three-hour game against Baltic, and again with a 6-5 score against Flandreau. The team’s record is currently at 2-0. The next game will be held this Friday in Garretson against Dell Rapids.
