On Monday, Mayor Greg Beaner signed a proclamation declaring February 20-27, 2021 FFA Week, with the FFA officers in attendance.

"We were really excited to bring this back to our FFA Week schedule of events," said FFA Advisor Alysha Kientopf.

Designated a national week in 1947, the week of George Washington’s birthday, National FFA Week runs from Saturday to Saturday and gives FFA members an opportunity to educate the public about agriculture. During the week, chapters conduct a variety of activities to help others in their schools and communities learn about FFA and agricultural education. Members of the SD FFA will celebrate National FFA Week by participating in activities including themed dress-up days, fundraisers, banquets and educational activities within their school and community.

“National FFA week is a special time for our organization and something we look forward to all year,” says Gerri Ann Eide, Executive Director of the South Dakota FFA Foundation. “We enjoy any time when we can help educate the public about agriculture, so having a week designated to that cause is very valuable to us.”

Throughout the week, Garretson elementary, middle school, and high school students have been participating in different activities such as the Goose Chase Challenge, ag literacy, and dress up days.

The annual Animal Nursery is being held today (Thursday) from 8:30 am. to 2:30 p.m., though time slots were required to be reserved in advance and masks are mandatory.

Thursday and Friday are dress up days. Thursday is Blue and Gold Day, while Friday is Country/Western Day.

The annual community appreciation breakfast will be held on Sunday, February 28 as a drive through/carry out event from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the American Legion. The FFA crew will be serving Pancakes, Sausage, Scrambled Eggs, Juice and Milk.

"The Community Appreciation Breakfast will be a little different," said Kientopf. "[It will be] encompassing a Drive Through/Carry Out style this year to respect social distancing measures. We will have the drive-through formed coming down Second Street on the south side of the Legion facing west. FFA Members will be outside, ready to greet you! If you would like to Carry Out, please park and enter the west door of the Legion. An FFA Member will be ready to help you get your breakfast for you and your family to carry out.

"We want to thank everyone in advance for your understanding and flexibility in the changes for this year; we hope to be back to banquet style in 2022!"
