This roadway runs along the western edge of the growing city of Hartford. Minnehaha County and the City of Hartford solicited a Request for Proposals from various consultants to complete a traffic study on County Highway 151 from Mickelson Rd. north to County Highway 130 and JEO Consulting Group was selected to complete the study. Minnehaha County will administer the project and the total project cost is estimated to be $125,000 and the Sioux Falls MPO has agreed to reimburse the County $102,437.50, which is 81.95% of the project. The remaining $22,562.50 will be split between Minnehaha County and the City of Hartford, making the County's share $11,281.25. 200 votes in precinct VP-10 primary net Pischke, Heisey, and Karsky wins

South Dakota suffered from a low turnout in Tuesday's primary election, with less than 20% of eligible voters casting a ballot. In Minnehaha County, that number dropped to 9.97%, and in precinct VP-10 in Garretson, it was even lower, with only 200 votes cast out of a possible 2,032 (9.8%).

Choices on the VP-10 ballot were limited, with Republican ballots listing a South Dakota Senate challenge, a Minnehaha County Commission challenge, and a precinct committee person seat. Democratic and Independent voters only had the choice of presidential challengers to incumbent President Joseph R. Biden.

In District 25, which includes Garretson, Baltic, Dell Rapids, and Flandreau, incumbent Tom Pischke successfully regained a chance for his seat in the South Dakota Senate with 1,085 votes (70%) versus his challenger, Jordan Youngberg. Youngberg garnered 30%, or 470 votes. Pischke will now be up against Democratic challenger Brian Wirth in November.

In District 2, which includes Brandon and Valley Springs along with eastern Sioux Falls, Jake Schoenbeck (16%) lost to John Sjaarda (46%) and David Kull (38%) for South Dakota State Representative.

For Minnehaha County Commission, there were four options, of which voters could choose two: Cole Heisey, Roger Russell, Dean Karsky, and Dan Kippley. Karskey was seeking re-election, and came in second with 25% (3,928 votes). Coming out on top was Cole Heisey, who won with 34% (5,359 votes) of the vote. Russell came in third with 83 fewer votes than Karsky, and Kippley, who is the father of current commissioner Joe Kippley, garnered 17% of the vote.

Karskey and Heisey will face Independent Anny Libbengood in November.

Committeewoman had two challengers for one seat on the Republican ballot, Tamara Panning and Melinda Roth. With only 127 votes cast, Roth came out ahead of Panning 52% to 48%.

With 2,856 votes cast in Minnehaha County for the Democratic Primary, current President Joe Biden took 75% of the vote. Challenger Marianne Williamson came in second with 9%, Minnesota's Dean Phillips had 7%, and Armando Perez-Serrato had 4%.

UPDATE 6/13/24: Karsky and Heisey will face independent Anny Libbengood in November. The original article mentioned Kippley instead of Heisey. We apologize for this error.

RASDAK will converge on Garretson this Saturday, June 1st!

By Carrie Moritz, Gazette

Garretson to Brookings. Milbank to Sisseton. Clark to Arlington. The 11th Annual Ride Across South Dakota, known as RASDAK, will have people touring the state on two wheels next week and seeing the state in a whole new light. They'll be starting and ending their route in Garretson.

Last November, the Gazette announced that the 11th annual bicycle tour would be launching from Garretson on Sunday, June 1, with bicyclists arriving on Saturday. Plans have been in the works since then to get the town ready for the event.

Cyclists will be staying in either the school gym or the south fields of the athletic complex and enjoying the local scenery.

"We want to get people off I-90 and exploring the smaller towns," volunteer tour director Kasey Abbott told the Gazette last November.

RASDAK is similar to the Tour de Kota, which was organized and sponsored by the Argus Leader for nearly a decade starting in 2005. Around 2008, Garretson hosted the event, and many remember it fondly.

This year is the 11th annual RASDAK ride, and the coordinators opted to create a loop that toured the east side of the state. In their 10th annual ride, the cyclists had viewed the western border, touring through the Black Hills. This year, they'll head through the Glacial Lakes regions, including Milbank, Clark, and Sisseton, and the Prairie Coteau, including Brookings, Arlington, and Garretson.

"This route will show off more lakes than any of our previous tours, but it will also show off parts of South Dakota that many of you have never seen before," said Abbott.

RASDAK is intentionally kept smaller than the more famous cycling event, RAGBRAI, capping off registrations at 250 cyclists. Beyond that, Abbott pointed out, it can be logistically difficult to support the number of amenities needed.

As of Monday, there were just over 230 cyclists representing 25 states and provinces registered, and Abbott expected registration to stay open until the day of the event. He also pointed out that daily passes are available to anyone who would like to tour 1-3 days.

On Saturday, the cyclists are expected to begin arriving around 4:00 p.m. and are encouraged to view the local parks, businesses, and amenities of Garretson. They'll be off early Sunday morning after a hearty breakfast provided by the American Legion. (The Legion will continue providing breakfast the rest of the morning, and residents are encouraged to come and enjoy their offerings.)

Cyclists are expected to begin returning to Garretson around mid-day on Friday, June 7 after a 60-mile trek from Arlington. Many may not stay for long, but some may still enjoy the amenities Garretson has to offer.

This exciting event will bring many new folks into town, and to them we say, welcome!

Wayne Moeller, WWII POW

Marty Luebke, Post 23 Member

The first Decoration Day honoring fallen Civil War Veterans started in 1868.  It wasn’t officially changed to Memorial Day until 1967.

We recently honored those men and women who made that ultimate sacrifice.

old newspaper photo of soldier headshot saying "downed in Germany"

It seems a fitting time to remember another man, Wayne Moeller from Garretson, who endured more than his share of hardships and witnessed firsthand fellow comrades who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Wayne served in World War II. Although this story is over 80 years old, it still is powerful and has meaning. I hope you find it as educational and interesting as I did.

Wayne passed away 22 years ago; many old timers still remember him (but not many have heard his story).

Dale Moeller, Wayne’s son, said, “Dad didn’t talk about the war much.  Only in his later years before he passed on did he talk about it."

However, thanks to his daughter, Waynette, who compiled 190 pages of history, there is a wealth of written information about Wayne’s WWII experiences- including in his own words (that will appear in quotes).  So, LEST WE FORGET, let’s take a glimpse of his story now.

Wayne was born Dec. 4, 1922 and married Anita Rosburg. They farmed west of Garretson and together they raised 2 sons, Lonell and Dale, and 2 daughters, Waynette and Karen. My apologies for limiting other early years and family history as the purpose of this story is to share Wayne’s WWII experiences.

14U vs Dell Rapids on May 21st

Despite a hard-fought game, the Garretson 14U baseball team took a loss last Tuesday in Dell Rapids after they took on Dell Rapids Red.

Chase Costello opened the game with a double on a line drive to left field at the top of the first inning, and scored when Cade Risty grounded out to the shortstop. Not to be outdone, Jacoby Costello followed soon after and singled on a ground ball to center field, ultimately scoring when Wyatt Potter hit a grounder and reached second on an error by the third baseman.

Garretson didn't hold on to the lead for long as Dells had a strong showing in the bottom of the first, scoring three. They worked to overcome it, briefly taking the lead again at the top of the third while holding Dells to zero more points. Unfortunately, the young team was unable to cross home plate again during the game, and Dells took the game 4-11.

Toeing the mound for Garretson were Costello and Cooper Smith, who each took three innings. Costello opened the game, striking out three, allowing seven hits, and walking three. Smith also struck out three, allowed four hits, and walked one.

Reaching on a hit were Colton Buchholz, who hit two in three at bats; Blake Benson, Potter, J. Costello and C. Costello.

Garretson 14U hosted Hills Beaver Creek on Tuesday (results not available at press time), and will be heading to Humboldt next Tuesday to take on West Central Gold. They'll be back on the home field on Friday, June 7 against the Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m.
