Owen Wiese

Owen Wiese, age 95, of Garretson, died on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at the Palisade Healthcare Community in Garretson. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:30-7:00 PM Tuesday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson.

Owen was born on July 12, 1929, at the DeVal Hospital on 3rd St in Garretson.  His mother always said that it was the hottest day of the summer.  His parents were R. P. and Ella (Erickson) Wiese.  Owen attended elementary school at various locations because of his father’s military movements.  He graduated from Garretson High School in 1947.  He attended the US Coast Guard Academy for one year.  He then transferred to the University of Missouri. He graduated from there in 1951. He had taken ROTC and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. of Artillery.  After taking the Officers Basic Course, he was called to active duty in the Korean War.  He served in the 12th FA Bn, 2nd Inf. Div.  He was awarded the Korean War Service Medal with three Battle Stars.

On September 19, 1953, Owen and Lois Jaquays were married in East Lansing, Michigan. They celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary on September 19, 2023.

After serving in Korea, Owen transferred to the Army Reserve in which he served until 1981.  He retired as a Colonel and was awarded the Legion of Merit.

Owen farmed in the Garretson area until 1999.  During all those years he was very active in Garretson community activities, belonging to several community organizations as well as county and state organizations. Owen was instrumental in the development of the River Ridge Golf Course in Garretson. He was a life member of the American Legion Post No 23 since 1953 and served in all offices.  In recent years he wrote articles for the Garretson Gazette.  He was also a member of Mensa since 1983.

Owen was preceded in death by his parents, R.P. and Ella Wiese, sister Anne Dunsford, her husband Jack and nephews David Dunsford and David Lund, niece, Jennell Jaquays, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Glenn and Mabel Jaquays, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Janet Jaquays.

He is survived by his wife Lois; daughters Kaie Wise, Suzanne Hayes, Jean (Mike) McPadden; three grandchildren, Erin (Reed) Petersek, Meg McPadden, and Sean (Jennifer Dryden) McPadden; and five great grandchildren, Owen, Sam, Raya, Lex, and Rollie Petersek; special friends Mary Beth Powell Wiesner and her family; and many other nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

In lieu of flowers it is suggested that donations be made to the Garretson Community Scholarship Foundation, or the South Dakota Legion Foundation, PO Box 67, Watertown, SD 57201.  www.minnehahafuneralhome.com

Editor’s Note:

Since I took over first management and then ownership of this newspaper, Owen was on the short list of our biggest community friends and supporters. I’ve lost count of the number of story tips and ideas he brought to the Gazette office. Most times, when he wanted something written about a particular thing or person, he didn’t wait for me to go and write it. He handed me the story he’d written about it, usually after he and Lois made sure it was exactly the quality of work he wanted for print. He did this so often, and his articles were so well received that I told him he basically had a free pass to write whatever he wanted whenever he wanted to, and it would go straight to print. Not a privilege I give out readily to say the least. He never disappointed, and his articles sold papers, that’s for sure! He was a passionate and driven man whom I both liked well and respected deeply, whom I believe leaves a great legacy in this community.

Bless you Owen. Though I’ve said it to you in person before now, I wanted to say it again where everybody can see it. We’ll miss you, until we meet again. Tell our former proofreader and your fellow Legionnaire Tara I said hello, will you? She always got a kick out of reading your articles. Always made her day, and mine and Carrie’s as well.

Everyone should have somebody like Owen in their lives.

4th Street construction begins Monday

On Tuesday, an open house-style public meeting was held regarding the 4th Street Project. There, attendees learned the contractor intended to start Monday, July 29 with equipment move-in and mobilization and Tuesday, July 30 with the full project.

This will mean 4th Street will be closed from Main Avenue to Eastern Avenue until mid-to-late November, when Phase I is expected to wrap up. Side streets between 3rd and 4th will be closed for the same project. These include Center Avenue, Canyon Avenue, and Eastern Avenue.

The street closure will bring updated infrastructure to the area, which includes a larger water main (from 4" to 6" in many areas), sanitary sewer line, storm sewer, curb and gutter, new pavement, and sidewalks.

While many attendees were concerned for their mature trees, not all will need to be removed as the contractor is planning to work around many of them. Those trees affected are those that have water or sewer lines under them, or are placed too close to the right-of-way.

The contractor and engineers from First Rate Excavate and Sayre Associates assured everyone that any specific requests will be taken under consideration, and all efforts would be made to ensure everyone had access to their homes. However, no traffic will be allowed on the street between Main and Eastern during the project.

Phase II will begin next April, weather permitting. That will include the area between Eastern and Oak Drive.

More information will be available in next week's edition of the Gazette.

Fatality accident at 487th Avenue and 253rd Street

Last Sunday, an ATV accident one mile east of Garretson took the life of 16-year-old Garretson High School student Alivia Christensen and sent another person, 30-year-old Mark Pierret, to the hospital in critical condition.

At 6:55 p.m., the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single vehicle accident on 487th Avenue, south of 253rd Street. A 2022 Polaris ATV with two occupants was traveling northbound on 487th Avenue when it entered the ditch, causing it to roll.

Christensen was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident. Pierret was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office, The South Dakota Highway Patrol, Garretson Ambulance, Garretson Fire and Rescue, and MedStar Ambulance assisted with this incident. The accident is being investigated by the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

On Monday, Superintendent Guy Johnson of the Garretson School District released a statement, saying, "We know her loss will be felt by many in the community."

After letting those affected know that counselors were available to those who needed it, they continued, "The strength in our community lies in our willingness and ability to support one another in difficult times. Please pass the word that counselors are available if you know that someone is struggling with this loss."

Christensen was described by her sister, Chloe, as a person full of life, with a contagious smile. She loved volleyball and wrestling.

On a GoFundMe for the family, Chloe wrote, "She was such a vibrant and free spirit that will always be missed. Alivia was a wonderful person who was taken from all of us way too early."

Alivia's GoFundMe can be found at https://gofund.me/f3b5f1cd. Mark's Caring Bridge can be found at https://www.caringbridge.org/site/2159636c-4932-11ef-9749-0192a4e9a21a

As of press time, all information was still preliminary.

UPDATE 7/25/24: Information was added about the second occupant.

"We want as many supporters as we can get to show up Friday night at 7:00 when we play first round against Clark," Linneweber said. "We have a young team, but I think they are up to and are embracing the challenge of trying to do special things at the state tournament. They have grown a lot this season and have represented American Legion Post #23 wonderfully on and off the field. I have truly enjoyed coaching them this summer and getting to know these young athletes. I want to thank them for their time and effort that they have put in all summer and also want to thank American Legion Post #23 for sponsoring our team and the Blue Dragon Foundation for everything they have done to provide such a wonderful facility for us to play at."

The Opening Ceremony will have the American Legion Post #23 Color Guard, and SDVFW Baseball Chairman Danny Frisby-Griffin will give a speech.

"Legion member and long-time Garretson baseball supporter Mark Williamson will be honored," said 14U Coach Cody Linneweber. "He will throw out the ceremonial first pitch."

Linneweber pointed out that it's a great opportunity for our community. The ball association intends for the tournament "to help bring business to our small town and help out our baseball programs and field."

The Garretson 14U team has had quite a season, as they came out nearly on top in last week's 14B Region 4 Tournament, taking home second place overall.

Coach Linneweber was upbeat about the results, stating, "We played shorthanded with only 10 players [during the tournament]. We had some that were unable to attend or had injury. Other players stepped up and we ended up getting 2nd place.

"We lost to Baltic first round, beat a good Centerville team, upset a very good Parker team that had beaten us easily two times earlier this season and made it back to the championship. We played well but ran out of pitching in the long run. We are excited to be able to play and have the chance to play in a state tourney. We are riding high after regions and playing good ball."

Cost for attendance to the tournament will be $10 per day for adults. Students are free. Summer season passes will not be accepted as this is a state event.

$1 foul balls and a great food menu will be available, as will a glossy, magazine-spread program with details of the tournament for sale.

13th Annual Tractor Ride will benefit Rock Valley Iowa Flood Victims!

The Tractor Ride has been an annual point of pride for the Garretson Area for years. Organizer Loren Konda told the Gazette last week that, although he hadn’t planned on doing a benefit tractor ride this year, far too many friends and regular riders had been directly affected by the recent floods for him to do nothing about it. So, this year, on August 7th, the ride will go forward with an entry fee being a free will donation. Proceeds will directly benefit the flood victims and residents of Rock Valley, Iowa.

Registration for all tractors will be at Kibble Equipment, located on Highway 11 in Garretson. Departure will be 8:30 a.m., and the ride will be 65 miles long. The route will take riders to the SWMN Christian School in Edgerton, Minnesota for lunch. Konda requests that all participants register by Aug. 2nd so that the church can have a confirmed RSVP for meal planning.

As always, any size age or color of tractor is welcome with the exception of dual wheels. All tractors must be able to safely travel up to 12 miles per hour and have the appropriate slow-moving vehicle signage mounted on the rear and easily visible. Extra riders are allowed, but only if they are properly situated on a mounted seat. Drivers are required to have a legal driver’s license and proof of insurance, and alcohol consumption is absolutely forbidden.

To register, please call or Text Loren Konda at 605-360-0372.

16U Baseball at Dell Rapids

On Monday, Garretson 16U baseball played its second to last game of the regular season in a tough game against Dells. Last week Wednesday and Thursday, they took on two Madison teams, coming away short against both.

Against the Madison Maroon team on Wednesday, Noah Schotzko opened the board for Garretson in the second inning when he hit a double out to left field, and scored when teammate I. Stoterau singled on a fly ball. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to overcome the 6 points Madison scored in the first inning and the second inning, bringing the score to 1-12.

In the third inning, Garretson pulled out three runs while keeping Madison to none, working hard to catch up. Garretson's Tyler Erickson pulled some moves and reached second on an error, scoring when Ian Buettner hit a fly ball out to center. Buettner then scored on a passed ball. With two outs, Dan Hoskins was hit by a pitch, and successfully stole 2nd and 3rd. He scored when Cole Schleuter singled on a fly ball to second base.

Garretson earned its final point of the game at the top of the fourth, as Stoterau successfully scored after stealing second and third. Unfortunately, the opponents gathered five more at the bottom of the inning, effectively ending the game 5-17.

On Thursday, the team hosted Madison Black, hoping to overcome the loss of the night before.

The two teams stayed neck-in-neck throughout much of the game, as they opened the game 2-3 in the first inning and kept each other to zero runs until the bottom of the 6th, when Garretson tied it up 3-3. They kept the tie at 4-4 at the end of the 7th, and headed into extra innings. Madison managed to pull out the win when they put five over home plate at the top of the 11th, ending the game 4-9.

Buettner led the game with three hits and two runs in five at bats. Of those hits, one was a double and one a triple.

On Monday, the team hosted Dells, and started the game off strong. They got on the scoreboard with two points at the bottom of the first, when Brecken Weir singled on a grounder to the pitcher and Buettner advanced home on a walk.

Garretson pulled further ahead in the bottom of the second when Elijah Winterton scored on a walk, and Schotzko crossed home on a fly ball from teammate Buettner.

Unfortunately, Dells pulled out the win when they scored five at the top of the fifth inning, and cinched it with four more at the top of the sixth while holding Garretson to zero. Despite a last-ditch effort at the bottom of the seventh, when Cole Jessen reached home on a passed ball, Garretson was unable to gather enough points to overcome that lead, ending the game 5-10.

Their final game of the regular season will be tonight (Thursday) in Flandreau at 7:00 p.m. They move into their postseason with the Region 3 Tournament on Monday, beginning with the Letcher Hawks at 7:00 p.m. and the Sticks at 5:00 p.m.

Garretson Red Hats for July

On Monday, July 8 seven red hat ladies headed south to LeMars, Iowa for afternoon at the Friendship tea house. After several twist and turns of detours we arrived.

We were greeted by owners Barb and Bob we sat down to a Frittata brunch with a couple flavors of different teas, with a brief history of tea and how the flavors were arrived at and also history of the tea cups and saucers how bone china was developed. After our brunch we were able to dress up using many different styles of clothing and were able to choose from over 200 hats to model. It was a very relaxed and informative afternoon.

From there we stopped in at the Blue Bunny ice cream parlor. While there we had ice cream and watched a video on how the Wells name originated.

It was a very enjoyable afternoon had by all, I would encourage anyone to check out the Friendship tea house and if you want information call 712–501-4088 or check out the website www.friendshipteahouse.com.
