Getting in the Ring! (Preview)

People who’ve frequented Palisades Oil and Palisades Kitchen here in Garretson will recognize Joseph Karnof of Pipestone, MN. Until very recently, he worked the counter and in the kitchen at Palisades (though he started a new job with Wells Fargo just two weeks ago).

But Joseph has another job that he enjoys. He’s a part of Midwest All-Pro Wrestling (M.A.P.).

Earlier this summer he did tryouts and became part of the company. This included an extremely grueling workout and rehearsal schedule.

The next Midwest All Pro Wrestling event will be at the Icon Lounge in Sioux Falls on Oct. 13, doors opening at 4 p.m, wrestling starting at 5 p.m.

GHS Homecoming 2019 Parade (Preview)

The 2019 Homecoming was a lot of fun for our students and community. Above is the GHS Marching band, who recently brought home some competition successes placing 2nd in Arlington, 1st in Beresford and 2nd in Luverne. Below is the GHS Homecoming Queen and King, Jayden Clark and Hayden Olofson, with the royal court Treyson Buckneberg, Dustin Haas, Brayden Beaner, Aftyn Heitkamp, Isabella Peters, Malia Johnson, McKenzie Northrup and Lucas Fitzgerald. (We should also note that Queen Clark drove the horse team as part of her senior project. The bottom photo are Blue Dragon superfans from the Blue Dragon Academy!

Blue Dragons have tough homecoming

Homecoming spirit was high this last Friday for the Garretson Blue Dragon Football team. The band played, the crowd cheered, and the fans really came out with a show of support.

All did not go the Dragon’s way however. The weather wasn’t great, with a raining drizzle and cold temperatures, that occasionally spurted to downpour status. It was a night for warm coats and umbrellas.

The teams were fairly evenly matched coming into the game, Garretson (3-3) and Elk Point- Jefferson also (3-3).

The Elk-Point/Jefferson Huskies lit up the scoreboard first with a 29-yard pass and follow-up extra point kick. But the Dragons rallied, and after a hard stomp up the field Dylan Kindt made a single yard run for a touchdown and Cody Erikson tied up the score with a nice kick.

The second quarter the Blue Dragons continued their Blue Streak, with two more touch- downs. At 8:16 Dominic Abraham crashed and weaved his way through with a 9-yard run for a touchdown. Erikson actually missed that kick, but the score was still 13-7 and things were looking up. Just two minutes later, Garretson had wrestled back control of the ball from the Huskies and Abraham again delivered that hot potato, this time running 29 yards. Then he went for two, and slid it right in, putting the score at 21-7!

At 16 seconds left on the clock the Huskies managed to get a pass in for a touchdown with an extra point kick. But the dragons went to the half with a score of 21-14.

When the third quarter began, it looked as if we might be able to hang on to that lead. There was no score made for the entire third quarter! With the weather worsening, many fans bugged out to watch the game on their TV’s at home, or some left confident in a Blue Dragon victory. It was not to be.

The Huskies’ Ethan Hammit, who had scored the previous two touchdowns and kicked in the extra points for Elk-Point/Jefferson, scored two more in the last quarter, and brought the score to Huskies 28 – Dragons 21.

“Friday’s loss was a tough one,” said head coach Chris Long. “We had several opportunities to make the play that would have made the difference between a win and a loss and we just didn’t get it done. The guys were in the right spots to make the plays, unfortunately it just didn’t happen and that’s the way it goes sometimes. This was the best we have played this year at times, we’ve yet to put a full game together and hope that we can get that done soon.”

This week GHS travels to Bridgewater to play Bridgewater/Emery/Ethan (6-0, undefeated).

“We have a tough task this Friday night with BEE, they have a really good tradition over there and we need to go in with a good plan and execute it well to give us our best chance,” said Long. “We have two games left and we need to get one of the two to guarantee ourselves a spot in the playoffs. Our goal is to peak at the right time and be ready once the second season begins.”

GHSXC has a big win at Sioux Valley Invitational

The Garretson Cross Country Team has continued to run straight into success this year.

In boys varsity at the Sioux Valley Invitaitonal, Preston Bohl again placed high, in 4th place. But this time the Girls Varsity team placed even better, with MaKayla Heesch taking first place! Kylie Christensen and Payton Campbell placed 10th and 11th respectively and Tayler Benson placed 18th. The ladies scored well enough to cinch the victory by 6 team points. We should also note that Mia Christensen also placed second in the girls jv race.

Coach Bohl had some big news for Garretson Cross Country fans!

“We were just notified that due to the conditions of the course in Flandreau, Garretson will now host the Region 2A Cross Country meet on Thursday, October 17,” he said.

Race schedule is as follows: 4:00 Varsity Girls, 4:30 Varsity Boys, 5 JV Girls, 5:30 JV Boys, & 6 Awards Ceremony.

Minnehaha County Commissioners declare Oct. ‘Domestic Violence Month,’ make final plans for online tax payments

0

By Dave Baumeister, County Correspondent

SIOUX FALLS – Minnehaha County Commissioners declared October as Domestic Violence Awareness month at the Tuesday, Oct. 1 meeting. Their official proclamation also highlighted the “Take Back the Night” awareness walk and dinner.

Those events will be held on Thursday, Oct. 10, at the Multi-Cultural Center at 515 N. Main Ave. in Sioux Falls. The walk is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner follows at 6 p.m.

Also, at this meeting, commissioners gave final approval to a plan that county offices have been working on with GovTech to accept online payments for property taxes.

Prior to this, people who didn’t have taxes escrowed, had to make payments by sending a check and the appropriate stub through the mail or dropping them off at the administration building.

Without the payment stub, people would need to take their payments to the County Treasurer’s Office, where they might have to wait in line to make sure the correct account was credited.

The new system allows for an ACH check draft through an online account. People from GovTech said in the past that those accounts are very easy to set up online.

The system will also allow for payments on multiple parcels at the same time, according to county I.T. specialist Monte Watembach, which is something that isn’t available now.

Currently, different parcels of land have to all be entered in separately, even if they are all owned by the same person or company.

The last of the major business came from county auditor Bob Litz, who presented commissioners with documentation on several parcels of land that were either to be auctioned off, gifted to the City of Sioux Falls, or deeded to a neighboring landowner.

As Litz explained, seven parcels of land will be sold at public auction on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 10 a.m. at the county administration building for “taxes due or better.”

Three other parcels would be gifted to Sioux Falls. Those plots are listed as “unbuildable” and used for drainage.

More of a complete description and the exact location for the auction can be found in the legal section of this newspaper.

The Minnehaha County Commission has its regular meetings each Tuesday at 9 a.m. on the second floor of the county administration building at 6th and Minnesota in Sioux Falls.

These meetings are open to the all, and public comment is always encouraged.

Post # 23 American Legion donates to SD AL Foundation

By Jim Kurtz, Henry G Fix Post #23

The Garretson area community is fortunate to have the Henry G. Fix Post # 23 as one of its own, and the Henry G. Fix Post # 23 American Legion is equally fortunate to have the tremendous community support that it has always had.  Thank you!  We are blessed with a vibrant membership, opportunities to participate in the Community, the State and the Nation, and because of the hard work of the membership and wonderful support of the community, we are fiscally strong.  Without a lot of fanfare, the Post has made donations to organizations in our community and area for decades, totaling well into the thousands each year.  In addition, we are fortunate to be able to sponsor students to SD Boys State, American Legion baseball, two teams of baseball players in the VFW program, American Legion oratory contests, community improvements, and causes.  A new opportunity and challenge has been presented to the Post, to make a significant donation to the SD American Legion Foundation, thus helping children, and the community of veterans in our State.

The South Dakota American Legion Foundation was established in 2010 to support the programs of the Legion, helping children and veterans.  The Foundation is a non-profit, 501(C)(3) tax-exempt organization, professionally managed by the South Dakota Community Foundation.  The principal of the funds remains in a permanent endowment that will only grow over time.  The income earned on the endowment is distributed to the SD American Legion and used for programs promoting the four pillars of the American Legion:  Children & Youth; Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation; Americanism; and National Security.  Locally we see these programs as SD Boys State, Legion Baseball, Flag Education, Youth Trooper, Oratorical Contests, supporting the families of deployed military members, providing final funeral honors to deceased veterans, improving remote healthcare access to rural veterans, and providing Temporary Financial Assistance when the need arises.

The Foundation is a success!  Income has been paid back each year for the past several years.  The amount grows as the Foundation balance grows.  It will be received by our SD American Legion this year, next year, the year after, 20 years from now, 80 years from now, & on forever.  With a present balance of approximately $189,000, the Foundation is already playing a key role in the future of The American Legion and its programs.  However, the potential is huge!  In order to have a significant impact on the future of The South Dakota American Legion, the Board of Directors of the Foundation has set a goal of raising the balance to $1,000,000 by 2024.  It will take generous participation by individuals, Posts, businesses and organizations to make this happen.

At its October meeting, the Henry G. Fix Post # 23 in Garretson voted to make a generous donation to the South Dakota American Legion Foundation, of $5,000 now, and an additional $5,000 in 2020.  Pictured above is Post # 23 Commander, Brian Siemonsma presenting the first check to SD Department Commander Fred Nelson.  Thank you to everyone who makes this possible!
