Adella Kayser

Adella Florence (Frank) Kayser, 98, passed away Thursday, April 14, 2022 at Avera-Maryhouse in Pierre with family by her side. Funeral Services were held at 1:00pm, Friday, April 22, 2022 at First United Methodist Church in Pierre. A recording of Adella’s service is available to be viewed at http://www.feigumfh.com.

Adella was born in Lesterville, SD, on April 3, 1924, to Philip and Christine (Mutschelknaus) Frank and grew up on a farm southeast of Scotland, SD, with her parents and younger sister, Lorraine. Adella went to grade school in the country and when she started school at the age of six, she mostly spoke German and had to learn the English language.

When she was 15, she moved into Scotland to live with a family and be a nanny to their small son for her room and board until 1942 when she graduated from high school. Shortly after she moved to town, a friend from school introduced her to a tall, blonde, handsome young man from Pierre who was her friend’s cousin. His name was Raymond Kayser and Adella was “smitten”!

Throughout the next three years, they exchanged letters back and forth and during that time, they were only able to see each other six times until in November 1942 they were married by the Justice of the Peace.

Their life together lasted for almost 64 years at Pierre where they raised four daughters: Sharon, Pam, Jan and Lonna. Adella loved to sew for her daughters and made a lot of their clothes when they were small. As the girls got older, she started making quilts from the scraps of her sewing endeavors and by the time she decided “no more” she had made over 1100 bed quilts, lap quilts and crocheted many afghans.

She enjoyed time outdoors keeping the yard looking beautiful and was always planting flowers, bushes and trees during the spring and summer until she ran out of room and Ray said “that’s enough”! As a true farm wife she was a great cook and was always baking and cooking three meals a day and enjoyed doing it for her family and whoever happened to show up at meal time.

Throughout their young married life, Adella and Ray enjoyed going out on a Saturday night with family and friends and loved to dance the night away at either the Izaak Walton or the Elks Club. As a couple on the dance floor, they were beautiful to watch! In 2003 they moved into Pierre and lived in an apartment at Parkwood Senior Living. Ray passed away in 2006 and Adella continued to live at Parkwood until November 2017 when she became a resident at Maryhouse.

In her late years, her mind might not have been the best, but she was a very social and well-liked woman. She would always dress “to the nines” and made sure she had her jewelry and make-up on every day. Her family will always have many wonderful memories of Adella to cherish and will forever remember that she was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother that loved them all greatly until her last breath.

Adella is survived by her daughters; Pam (Larrie) Hunsley of Pierre; Jan (Jeff) Benson, Garretson, SD; Lonna Carroll, Fort Pierre and son-in-law David Johnson; grandchildren: Scott Johnson, Todd (Terri) Johnson and Britt (Shawn) Williams, all of Pierre; Amy (Derek) McTighe of Sioux Falls, SD; Jase (Jamie) Benson and Jade Benson of Garretson, SD; Jaime (Tom) Huebner of Dell Rapids, SD; Leslee Carroll of Sioux Falls, SD and Jay (Dana) Carroll of Algona, Iowa; 23 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, along with numerous beloved nieces and nephews and extended family members. Adella was preceded in death by her husband Ray, a daughter Sharon Johnson, her sister Lorraine, her parents and an infant baby brother, Bobby; four brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.

Condolences may be conveyed to the family at http://www.feigumfh.com

Mueller and Stoltenberg ready to start new adventures

Two Garretson teaching icons retire this year

After many years of teaching the middle school, English teacher Mrs. Stoltenberg and science teacher Mrs. Mueller are setting themselves up for a different change of pace at the end of this year, as both have announced their retirements. They have both done a lot for our school in the time they have been here, and they will be greatly missed.

The kids loved Mrs. Mueller’s class and the labs she had the students do.

“My favorite memory with Mrs. Mueller is when she came back from surgery and we did the exercises; those were fun,” said Isabelle Froehlic. Even when Mrs. Mueller was out for surgery, she came back better than ever and got her students involved with her exercises among many other hands-on activities.

Mrs. Mueller will continue to be part of our school and you can see her taking tickets at the soccer game. She will miss the kids but says it also will be nice to have time to herself and not feel bad when she has to leave town and can’t grade papers.

Mrs. Stoltenberg has been at our school for 40 years and has done a lot for our school. She takes the time to get to know her students and tries to make them achieve.

“I’m going to miss the kids,” stated Stoltenberg, but she did say that she was looking forward to enjoying and spending time with her grandkids and traveling with her husband.

In her 40 years of education, Stoltenberg has seen a variety of changes. “The hardest part about working for this long was technology and seeing how much it’s changed,” Mrs. Stoltenberg stated.

The kids enjoy the fun games that Stoltenberg provides them to engage with their English. Students' favorite memory with her was on April Fool’s Day, where they all ditched her class and they had a quiz that day and she reversed that prank on them.

These teachers have done a lot for other teachers and students. It will be different without these two teachers in the hallways. But we wish them a wonderful retirement and thank them for all they have done for Garretson.

Letter to the Editor: Go Alliance Team!

When Capital Credit Checks come in the mail from Alliance Communications, virtually every year, it is a reminder of how fortunate we are to have this great cooperative serving our communities, town and country. Alliance has been a pillar for our business and we simply could have NEVER grown our business from our family dairy farm without them.  The things the school has been able to do with technology would not have been possible.  They stepped up during Covid to make sure we could reach every family. The leadership and team from Splitrock Telecom and the transition to Alliance have been tremendous. Their vision to have the latest technology gave us the opportunity to lead in our industry with technology from a dairy farm in rural South Dakota. Give a shout out to these great service driven folks that have made it happen in the past and those that make it happen today!  Thank you Alliance Team!  We are very fortunate to have a cooperative like no other serving our community.

For our family and our team,
Shannon Nordstrom.

Steckler honored as Region AD of the Year

by Addi Kratochvil, GHS Blue Ink
Some people were wondering where Garretson High School teacher Kevin Steckler was the other week. Steckler was in Deadwood at the annual South Dakota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association athletic director conference, where he was recognized as the Region 5 Athletic Director of the Year. This should come to no surprise due to how much he does for sports and the community.

Kevin Steckler
Before becoming activities director, Kevin Steckler wore many different hats, including football, basketball and baseball coach throughout his tenure with Garretson. Photo submitted by Mr. Kevin Steckler.

Steckler has been coaching for 35-plus years; whether it was football, basketball, track or just simply helping with other activities.

He said that he wanted a new challenge in his career.

Steckler said, “There was just a coincidence that the athletic director position became open, I thought this would be a new challenge for me to guide every sport and every activity. So I approached Mr. Johnson and he took a chance on me, and now I’m in my sixth year of being an activities director.”

Steckler has the job of making sure that coaches and players understand the rules and guidelines, not just from the school but also from the South Dakota High School Activities Association, of the game they’re playing or coaching. Also, he makes sure that the team has what they need such as new footballs, soccer nets, or anything that becomes a necessity for the sport. Another duty is scheduling, both officials for the games and the games themselves.

Which comes down to all the budgeting tasks he needs to manage, by providing what all activities need.

Steckler does not just handle sports he handles all activities such as oral interp, one act play, band and chorus.

Steckler said jokingly, “Every coach is like a child; they always want something.” Which he could relate to because he coached for 30 plus years and always wanted something to better his team. Budget wise sometimes he has to say no because he didn’t factor that into the sports budget that he plans months in advance.

He also is in charge of making sure that all kids have their grades up; he has to handle the parents. Steckler said that he enjoyed the new challenges and learning about some of the sports he didn’t know a lot about before such as soccer, volleyball, and wrestling.

Steckler received his award at the athletic directors conference in Deadwood that was March 30-April 1. The region coordinator contacted him and said he was the recipient of the award.

Steckler said, “The cool thing about this award is that you were chosen by your peers, which makes this award even more special because they walk in the same shoes every day and go through the ups and downs, the highs and the lows.”

Nordstrom’s Automotive Inc wants to remind the public that automotive recycling is recycling at the purest. Re-use is the ultimate form of recycling. Raw materials and expensive manufacturing are not required when a quality used auto part is harvested from another vehicle and used again. Reusing the Green Recycled Parts® is the best way to recycle for sure, but there is more!  Approximately 86 percent of each vehicle is recycled. That equates to six million tires, 100 million Gallons of Gas and Diesel fuel, 24 million gallons of motor oil, eight million gallons of engine coolant and 4.5 million gallons of windshield wiper fluid annually. Every year end of life vehicles produces over 14 million tons of steel to be reused and recycled. More than 97 percent of all the vehicle battery lead is recycled. Certified Auto Recyclers and others like Nordstrom’s have removed over 4 million switches containing mercury. This effort has stopped over 8500 pounds of environmentally contaminating Mercury from causing dangerous pollution. With the effort of conscious Auto Recyclers, the vehicle is one of the greenest products on the planet! The size of the American automotive fleet currently numbers approximately 270 million vehicles, nearly one apiece for every man woman and child in the country. Of these, it is estimated that nearly 11 million vehicles are taken off the road each year when they are totaled in accidents or reach their End of Life. (EOL) Nordstrom’s Automotive Inc of rural Garretson is a Certified Auto Recycler (CAR) who prides themselves in offering our customers great savings while promoting a green environment.  All harmful pollutants are contained and disposed of properly throughout our dismantling operation. Nordstrom’s has been recycling EOL vehicles since the late 1960’s’; over 50 years!  Nordstrom’s was the 2018 STAR CERTIFIED AUTO RECYCLER FOR THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES! AS VOTED BY THE AUTOMTOIVE RECYCLERS ASSOCIATION. (A-R-A.ORG)
