Been wanting to try goat yoga? You can – just outside Garretson

by Jodi Schwan, Pigeon605

“I’m going to make this happen.”

Nikki Highby was a newly trained yoga instructor with a goal: Find goats.

“Yoga with animals in general kind of brings together all our loves: the outdoors, animals, yoga,” said Highby, who lives outside Garretson with her husband, Clark.

They both completed their 200-hour yoga teacher training over the past year, and he suggested opening a studio.

She agreed – but first, with a twist.

“I love animals, we both do, and we live in the country. We have a million animals, and I had always wanted to do goat yoga, but I couldn’t find a place that did it,” she said.

So one day not long ago, she logged onto the Garretson Living Facebook group and put it out there in a post.

            “Who’s got goats?”

            And who responded?

Dr. Beth Jensen, whose family happens to live 5 miles up a gravel road from the Highby family.

“Within two weeks, they put up a fence for me, and we put up a trial run,” said Jensen, a family physician at Sanford Health who founded the nonprofit Glean for Good at her family farm as a way to encourage sustainable access to food.

“All three of us had heard about this before and thought, how hard is it? You just get a couple instructors and add some goats, and it’s goat yoga, so we said let’s make this happen.”

And they did. The first session in late May drew 28 people.

“We had somebody approaching 90 who had never done yoga before and a couple little kiddos,” Jensen said. “It really is wonderful just to watch people of all ages getting in there.”

Goat yoga essentially is what it sounds like – full flow yoga class held outdoors in a pen while goats comingle with the participants.

“There are just goats running around the pen, and you can expect they’re going to come up and nuzzle you and maybe nibble,” Highby said.

“They love to come up and get in your hair, and there are baby goats jumping all over the place and climbing up on you, but it’s pure fun and joy.”

The second week again drew a crowd, with some repeat visitors and others who have said they plan to come from up to an hour away.

            “It’s been amazing,” Highby said.

“I really do just believe we’re in the very beginning stages and the very beginning of an amazing relationship. Beth and her whole family are just amazing, and the whole idea behind Glean for Good is … being conscious of people around you, helping out, and that’s kind of why my husband and I started with yoga. It’s more than a workout. It’s mind, body, spirit, so I feel like mine and Beth’s ideas just feed off each other.”

For now, there is a $10 charge for the class, and guests are asked to considering bringing an ice cream bucket or equivalent container with food scraps from home to feed to the animals at Glean for Good. Jensen’s menagerie includes sheep, pigs, a llama and soon – more goats.

“We’re expecting quite a few more goat kids this summer,” Jensen said. “Heather is really fluffy and white and looks about ready to pop. We have another one, Thelma, who usually has triplets.”

There are about 20 goats at Glean for Good – only those that make the cut are invited to yoga, which means not trying to leap over the fence or sneak under the pen.

“All our goats are very sweet, but some are just a little bit more escape artist than others,” Jensen said.

The broader vision at Glean for Good is to create an edible park and food forest.

“We have about 400 fruit trees … and the idea is eventually we have so many bushes and trees and perennials it could feed the masses and people can just come out and pick it themselves,” Jensen said. “We have done several events already.”

Goat yoga will continue as long as the weather allows, which could be well into the fall, they said. The next class is Thursday, June 23. To learn more, click here.

When they’re not instructing yoga in a farm pen, Clark Highby is a heavy equipment operator and Nikki is a first grade teacher who also volunteers doing equine therapy. When she left after last week’s session, she realized her face hurt from smiling for so long.

“So far everything I’ve gathered is that everybody has loved it,” she said.

“It gives people something new and fun, and nature is therapy, animals are therapy, and yoga is therapy, and you put it all together and what a better way to feel better.”

Garretson Welcomes Thompson Eslinger

The boy that beat the odds

Thompson Eslinger
Parents Heather Tyrrell and Josh Eslinger with baby Thompson, who came home Monday at 8 pounds, 2 ounces after weighing only 1 pound, 0.6 ounces at birth.

Heather Tyrrell and Josh Eslinger were happy to announce their upcoming addition to their family last fall, and looked forward to the April 24 birthdate. However, on December 6, Tyrrell entered the hospital after some bleeding, and attempts to stop an early birth were unsuccessful.

Thompson Eslinger was born at 22 weeks gestational age on December 19, 2021, weighing 1 pound, 0.6 ounces and was only 10 inches long. Any doctor will tell you that infant viability at that age is extremely tricky, and simply wouldn’t have been possible even just a few years ago. Thankfully, Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, South Dakota has one of the best neo-natal intensive care wards in the nation.

Thompson and his parents have had a long, hard road since December, but against all odds, against setbacks, surgeries and infections, Thompson made steady progress and thrived.  On Monday, June 20th 2022, Thompson came home at 8 pounds 2 ounces! The family and community at large is rejoicing with this news! The bravery of his parents is inspiring, as is the love and support they have felt from their family and this community.

            Welcome home Thompson!

Obituary: Mary Louise (Risty) Datri, 95

0

Mary Louise (Risty) Datri, of Tucson, Arizona (formerly of Garretson, South Dakota and Eugene, Oregon), passed away suddenly and unexpectedly of a stroke on June 4, 2022, at the age of 95. Mary (known as “Weesie” to her five siblings) was born to Bertha Andrina (Stensland) and Gullick Theodore Risty in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on January 31, 1927, and grew up on a farm just outside of Garretson.

She attended Augustana College and Nettleton Business School in Sioux Falls, intending to become an accountant. However, her career plans were interrupted when she married Joseph Allen Datri in 1948, moved to Sioux City, Iowa, worked for Wincharger Company, and started a family!   She, Joe, and their two kids made trips between Iowa and the west coast, and eventually moved "permanently" to Eugene, Oregon, about 1954.

Mary earned her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Elementary Education and Special Education, respectively, from the University of Oregon. She taught first grade for several years, and then taught Primary Special Ed for several more years.

In 1975, Mary retired from teaching and moved with Joe to Tucson, Arizona, where she busied herself with gardening, her pets, and writing children's stories about the desert animals she observed from her living room windows. She also enjoyed making lamps from “interesting” bottles or other materials. She was an avid reader, and excelled at crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She enjoyed visiting with friends, relatives, her children and grandchildren, and eventually playing with her great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Joe, died in 2012, after nearly 65 years of marriage to Mary. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Shirley (Risty) Williamson, Betsy (Risty) Shafer, Gertrude Ann (Risty) Waring, and her only brother, Austin Risty.

She is survived by her daughter Betsy Datri, her son Gary Datri, her step-daughter Leslie Van Drongelen; her grandchildren Daniele Ott, Angela Zaragoza, Amber Roche, Arlen Roche, Brian Eimstad, Lindsay Jenkins, Joseph Datri; several great-grandchildren; a sister Dorothy Risty-Schon; a cousin Bill Snyder; a sister-in-law Joyce (Benson) Risty, a brother-in law Bob Waring; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Boys Golf takes runner up at State!

Boys golf team runner up

The Garretson High School Golf Team traveled to Rapid City on Monday and Tuesday, June 6 and 7. Class B Girls played at Hart Ranch Golf Course, while the Class B Boys teed off at Elks Golf Course. The Boys team placed 2nd overall, and the Girls team placed 10th.

The weather played a major hand in the tournament, forcing delays and postponements, and ultimately canceling the second day of boys' golf. This meant all scores for boys were decided by the first day's results.

The Boys team, which consisted of Cooper Long, Dylan Kindt, Ryan Flanagan, and Dylan Jessen, had 240 strokes with +24 to par gross.  Long scored 3rd overall in a 4-way tie with 77 strokes, only +5 gross, and earned All-State Team honors. Kindt was 14th overall with 81 strokes, Flanagan was 21st with 82, and Jessen was 104th.

There were 123 total individual competitors and 20 teams at the state tournament for boys.

Coach Kari Stoltenberg said, "The boys places were awarded by the first day’s 18 hole scores due to second round being suspended and finally canceled on the second day because of thunderstorms.  The boys actually had to come back early Tuesday morning to finish Monday’s round which was also suspended because of thunderstorms. Then once Tuesday’s rounds got underway, the GHS boys put on a charge and moved into first place.  Cooper Long had also moved back into 1st place while Dylan Kindt and Ryan Flanagan were also improving on their previous rounds. Dylan Jessen had several holes to finish early on Day 2 and then had to be prepared to start a new round right after.  That is not an easy task.  Unfortunately, since play was suspended and they were not able to finish the 36 hole tournament, the places reverted back to scores from Day 1."

The Girls team, who were able to play both days, consisted of Katie Hanson, Autumn Gaspar, Addison Hove, and Maci Rotert. They had a total of 624 strokes, +192 to par gross. Hanson was the best scorer for the Dragons with only 99 strokes on day 1 and 98 on day 2, placing her at 30th overall in a 3-way tie. Gaspar wasn't far behind with 103 strokes on day 1 and 102 strokes on day 2, putting her 42nd overall in a 3-way tie. Hove and Rotert were both 68th overall.

The girls had 100 total individual competitors and 15 teams at the state tournament.

"The girls were able to complete the 36 hole tournament and so their places were awarded for their 2 Day totals," said Stoltenberg. "They did have suspended play both days as well, but officials at Hart Ranch worked patiently to wait out the suspensions and get the girls back on the course."

She continued, "The 2022 State B Golf Tournament was chaotic to say the least.  But the GHS golfers persevered and came through well.  I was so proud of each individual player as well as the teams’ efforts.

"The boys went into the tournament knowing that they all had to come together to get this done, and they did just that.  Having 3 boys finish in the top 25 was a great accomplishment for them as that is what the medal places are at state.

Ryan Flanagan playing golf

"With Cooper’s 3rd place finish, he also earned All-State Team Honors.  Of course, there was some disappointment in not being allowed to finish the second day’s round as results may have changed.  But nonetheless, a 2nd place finish in a field of 20 shows the great success and ability of this team.

"The girls also had weather conditions to contend with, and with grit and determination finished the 36 hole tournament, beginning play in the rain after the suspension on Tuesday.             "Senior Katie Hanson led the team followed by Junior Autumn Gaspar, and I was also impressed by the 2 freshmen Addison Hove and Maci Rotert playing in their first state golf tournament.  The girls had a tough course to play and they handled it with well.  We’ll be watching for good things to come in the next few years from these underclassmen.

"After completing over 30 years as GHS head golf coach, I was more than proud to have these fine athletes on my final team.  I wish them all the best and hope they continue to play for the love of the game!!"
