Last chance to catch GHS Soccer at home will be Tonight, Thursday Sept. 22nd!

GHS Soccer

The Blue Dragon soccer team hosted the Vermillion Tanagers last Tuesday, September 13, and lost 0-5. The team was slated to play West Central on Thursday, but the game was canceled, which meant the team could squeeze in extra practice before heading to N. Sioux City on Tuesday, Sept 20 (results not available at press time). Their final regular home game of the season will be tonight (Thursday) at 5:00 p.m. Join the team as they look to get revenge on Sioux Falls Christian! -Photos by Tara Hough

GHS Cross Country in Chamberlain

The Garretson Cross Country Harriers have continued their busy pace, heading to Chamberlain on Thursday and Alcester-Hudson on Monday to compete.

GHS Cross Country
Emma Hanson, Eliza Potter

Coach Jason Bohl had this to say about Chamberlain: "Emma Hanson led the way with her 10th place finish in the girls JV.  Emma ran a time of 21:48 for 4000 meters.  Eliza Potter finished in 20th in a time of 23:50.

"On the boys side, Noah Schotzko was the first Blue Dragon harrier in the JV race when he came in 16th with a time of 18:44 over 4000 meters.  Sebastian Deyoung finished 23rd in a time of 19:11, Nathanial Roberts followed in 27th in a time of 19:24.  Talon Miller rounded out the Garretson runners when he finished in 37th with a time of 20:37."

Next, the harriers headed to Alcester-Hudson.

Said Bohl, "Everyone ran JV and we had 3 medalists:  Emma Hanson (8th), Eliza Potter (11th), and Noah Schotzko (7th)." Times for each were 22:45.93, 23:23.71, and 18:40.61.

Next Tuesday, the team heads to Volga to compete at the Sioux Valley Invite.

GHS Cross Country
Nathanial Roberts

Due to errors, there are corrections from last week: In Luverne, Schotzko hit a time of 17:06.10, placing 11th overall in JV. Potter finished with a time of 21:10.30, also finishing 11th. Deyoung placed 14th with a time of 17:10.09, Roberts finished 25th with a time of 18:41.60. Miller placed 10th out of 35 participants in the 3,200-meter middle school event with a time of 14:59.02. Hanson took 9th overall in a crowd of 26 with a run time of 15:48.12 in the 3,200-meter middle school event. The photo labeled Talon Miller was captioned incorrectly, the pictured harrier was Nate Roberts.

Blue Dragon Volleyball snags two more wins

Last week, the Lady Dragon Volleyball team headed to Flandreau and Elkton to take on the Fliers and the Elks. They came away with the win on both games, though the Elks reminded the Lady Dragons that they weren't invincible by winning the second set. Before Tuesday's game against Dell Rapids, the Blue Dragons overall season score was 8-4.

On Tuesday, September 13, the team faced off with the Fliers and managed to take them down in three sets. Flandreau kept the Dragons on their toes throughout the first half of set one, as they matched Garretson point-for-point. However, the Blue Dragons pulled away after the 12-12 tie and kept Flandreau in the rearview mirror for the rest of the set. They won that set 25-15, and kept Flandreau grounded for the next two sets, winning 25-18 for both.

Saturday, the team again boarded a bus and headed to Elkton (8-3) to school the Elks. The home team didn't make it easy for the Dragons, winning set two 22-25 after Garretson took set one 25-19. Garretson took the lesson and applied it, snagging the next two sets 25-20 and 25-23 in a hard-won fight for the win.

For the season so far, Kaylin Koch, Logan Bly, and Aleah Wagner led in kills, with averages of 3, 2.7, and 2.5 kills per set. Bly and Wagner also led in digs per set, with 3.7 and 3.1, respectively. Sydney Olson follows closely with an average of 2.7 digs. Total blocks are led by Bly (9), Anna Jones (8), and Kaylin Koch (7), while Grace Hove, Olson, and Koch lead in total aces with 18, 11, and 11. Hove is queen of assists with 209 under her belt this season. Wagner, Koch, and Tayler Benson lead the way with total receptions as they have received and passed 96, 72, and 70 balls so far this year.

The Dragons played Dell Rapids on the home court on Tuesday (results not available at press time) and will be home again tonight to take on Chester Area. JV begins at 6:00 and Varsity will begin around 7:15 p.m.

Garretson 5-6th Grade Football 4-0

5-6th grade football team

The 5th/6th grade Garretson football team had some surprise fans on their sidelines for their game against Sioux Falls Tuesday night, 9/13/22. Some of the Garretson varsity football players came out to support the team and cheered them on to a 21-0 victory; the team is now 4-0. It is always so wonderful to see these older players come out to support the younger players as a lot of the younger players really look up to the Varsity boys. The 6th grade boys on the team also serve as the Varsity team's ball boys! (photo & story submitted)

Garretson is the City of Parks this summer!

0

The Garretson Parks Board has been busy this summer ensuring Split Rock Park, Devils Gulch, and the Jaycees Sports Complex remain jewels for the community.

Franka planting
City council member and Park Board advisor Greg Franka helped the other members of the Park Board plant sedums earlier this month. Those plants were graciously donated by the McPadden family. To the right are zinnias that were seeded this past spring, which helped attract hummingbird moths and monarchs to the park. Photo courtesy Sonya Swanson

They just recently had the dam at Split Rock Park inspected, which had some areas that could potentially be of concern. At the city council meeting held on September 12, Park Board member Sonya Swanson reported the condition of the dam "was better than expected." The area in the middle that was of most concern was mostly cosmetic, she said.

However, the inspection company did recommend doing yearly reports, taking photos and videos to log water flow and to ensure there wasn't any missed deterioration. Swanson stated she has done this, and created a file at the city office.

She also reported that cover crops and seeding is taking place in a few areas of Split Rock Park that have been re-worked in the past two years. These areas have a goal of encouraging native and pollinator plant growth, as well as creating spaces within the park for visitors to enjoy nature.

The board installed pathways within the area north of the playground, which should help keep foot traffic to a minimum within the growth area but allow everyone to enjoy the plants. That same area also saw zinnias seeded and come to fruition this past summer, and sedums planted a few weeks ago.

Over the past two years, that entire area has seen an overhaul, first from removing a large amount of volunteer growth (including buckthorns, an invasive bush-type tree that contains large thorns), then by re-locating large quartzite rocks and clearing off quartzite that was already in the space but hidden by dirt and overgrowth.

Within the next two summers, more native and pollinator plants should start growing in the bare spaces as they take hold.

Along with the parks, tree inventory has been at the top of the city's priority list. This past week, SD Dept of Agriculture and Natural Resources' John Hartland has been leading a team around Garretson to catalog all trees in public areas and right-of-ways. All trees in those areas will be placed into an electronic database to help the city understand how many trees will be impacted by the emerald ash borer, how many could be impacted in the future due to other invasive species, and to help diversify Garretson's tree cover. They began in Split Rock Park on Monday morning, and were making fairly good progress by press time on Tuesday.

Special Meeting on Oct. 26th & School year has an extra day

Though it was mostly routine business at the Garretson School Board meeting last week, there were a few items of note. The board will hold a special meeting on Oct. 26 to talk about a Tax Opt-Out and the project to repair the Athletic Complex.

GHS Football
The athletic complex hosts football, soccer, track and field, and other school-related and community-related events throughout the year. The complex is in need of repair, but since this is a specialized turf, will require specialized repairs.

There were three lane change pay raises for Alysha Kientopf, Amber Williamson, and Emily Backer, all of whom had earned master’s degrees during the summer education cycle. And, after their executive session, the School Board voted to make Mallory Zell the High School Special Education Teacher for an annual salary of $43,230. By this, we can infer that the State Education Department finally came through with the waiver for the district that they had been hoping for.

They also voted to surplus and sell the storage shed on the school playground by sealed bid. The shed is repairable, but with the roof damage the shed has sustained, the administration and maintenance staff determined it was not worth their time to fix.

The next noteworthy item was that one of the teachers had discovered a discrepancy in the school calendar this year. There were supposed to be 180 regular educational days in the school calendar for the 22-23 year, however the calendar the board passed had 181 days scheduled.

“We’ve got an extra day accidentally scheduled,” said Supt. Guy Johnson. “What you want to do about that is up to you, but I recommend that we just acknowledge that it’s incorrect, and move on for now. Maybe revisit it at a later time after we see what the winter brings?”

Considering the possibilities of snow days, the board thought that this was a good suggestion and tabled discussion of changing the calendar until the February meeting, when they’d have a better idea of the number of snow days that would need to be used.

The board also discussed and set a date for a special meeting.  The items to be talked about would be the proposed repairs to the Athletic Complex and a potential tax opt-out.

“They kind of go hand in hand,” said Board President Shannon Nordstrom. “We need to make the repairs out there. Also, if you look at the budget we just talked about we are deficit spending this year, and it’s not going to be sustainable. These are big issues, and we really should devote a whole meeting to it.”

The board decided on holding the special meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 26th starting at 6 p.m.

Both principals, Katie Hoekman and Chris McGregor, had reports for the board. Hoekman’s report involved student testing, using new tests and tools to better serve the needs of the students. McGregor gave details for upcoming homecoming celebrations starting on Monday, Sept. 26 through Friday Sept. 30th. He also noted the Challenge Day scheduled for Monday, Oct. 3.

Supt. Guy Johnson then gave his report. Final student number counts will be held on Sept. 30. He said that so far there has been some fluctuation, with some families leaving the area and some moving in. As of this meeting, seven new students had open enrolled into the district of the nine students who applied. Two were denied because the district didn’t have the special educational resources necessary to serve these students. Ten students open enrolled out of the district. Total numbers as of this meeting were 451 students in K-12.

Supt. Johnson then informed the board that the school’s upcoming accreditation certification would be happening this November.

New board member Jodi Gloe reported to the board that she missed her first meeting as their liaison to the Prairie Lakes Coop, but Supt. Johnson said that the follow-up Superintendents' meeting had nothing of importance, only the payment of bills and salaries for the Cooperative.

Jacobson takes 2nd in Beard Clash

Matthew "Jake" Jacobson took Second place at the 2022 Beard Clash at the Bottom’s Up bar in Corson, sponsored by the Sioux Falls Facial Hair Club.

“They had folks from all over competing in this contest,” said Matthew Jacobson. “I’d heard about this contest before but it had never worked out for me to actually attend. It is something I’d been wanting to try to enter and I ended up winning second place in the 8-12-inch category.  There were some very impressive beards of all types, some much larger than mine. It was a lot of fun to hang out with people who shared a lot of the same interests and it was nice to raise money for a good cause too. A lot of fun and I’d certainly do it again.”
