Garretson 16U grabs win Monday

            Last Thursday, June 1, the Garretson 16U baseball team headed to Madison to take on Madison Maroon, a game that was interrupted in the third inning after Madison had acquired seven points to Garretson's zero.

            However, the team in blue made up for that on Monday at Tandberg Field, showing Volga that they could come back from what looked like certain defeat, ending the game 13-10. Garretson gathered one point per inning for the first three, while Volga grabbed 7 points, putting the score at 3-7 at the top of the fourth.

            That changed at the bottom of the fourth, when Garretson's Noah Schotzko singled on a line drive to the center field, allowing Cole Schleuter to advance to second base. A stinging ball into Carter Siemonsma's side loaded the bases, allowing Schleuter to score when Volga walked Collin Olson. Volga then walked Cole Jessen, sending Schotzko home, and a center field single by Ian Buettner brought Siemonsma and Olson over the home plate. Now nearly tied at 7-9, Trey Decker hit a grounder and reached first base on an error by the third baseman while Jessen and Ian Buettner scored.

            With the game now tied 9-9, Garretson offense kicked into high gear, taking out the Volga team in five plays at the top of the fifth, allowing only one point when Volga's Olsen stole home.

            Garretson's Carsten Rozeboom quickly tied the game back up by stealing home at the bottom of the fifth, and Garretson cinched the lead with three more points while not allowing Volga any more over the next two innings.

            Buettner and Jessen both toed the pitcher's mound for Garretson, with 3 innings and 4 innings, respectively. Buettner struck out one and allowed 9 hits, while Jessen struck out seven and allowed 3 hits.

            Siemonsma literally stole the game as he successfully stole four bases, while Tyler Erickson and Olson each stole two. Rozeboom stole one while Dylan Wolf and Jessen were each caught stealing their bases.

            Erickson, Buettner, Wolf, Brecken Weir, Schotzko, and Siemonsma each hit the ball from Volga's pitchers, who allowed eight hits while striking out four.

            Garretson 16U heads to Dell Rapids tomorrow (Friday) and Humboldt on Monday. Its next home game will be on Tuesday, June 20 at 7:00 p.m.

GHS Golf @ State in Watertown

            This week, Garretson Golf sent five athletes to Watertown to compete in the Class B State Tournament.

            While results are preliminary, as of press time, the Garretson Girls team were in eleventh place overall, tied with Selby at 178 points over par. Overall, they had a total of 610 points.

            Autumn Gaspar was tied for 34th after the second round of play with 46 points over par. She had a total of 190 points. Her fellow teammates, Maci Rotert, Addi Hove, and Grace Hove were in 61st, 72nd, and 78th place, respectively, with 206, 215, and 219 total points.

            For the boys, preliminary results had Dylan Jessen and Cash Pullman in 87th and 97th place, respectively. After both rounds of play, Jessen was 48 points over par and had a total of 192 points, and Pullman was 52 over par and had a total of 196 points.

            Special Education records and 504 Plans which have been collected by the Garretson School District related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement, or the provision of Special Education in the district, must be maintained under state and federal laws for a period of five years after Special Education Services and 504 Plans have ended for the student. Special Education services end when the student no longer is eligible for services, graduates, completes his or her educational program on June 30th of the year after he/she turns 21, or moves from the district.

Honoring those who died to give us life, liberty and happiness

            Memorial Day is always a solemn, and serious affair here in Garretson. Erin Brown, director of the South Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery in Sioux Falls, was this year’s keynote speaker. Brown is a Luverne, Minnesota native, a Persian Gulf War Veteran, and in her civilian career has worked for Veteran’s Services in both Minnesota and South Dakota. After several promotions, in 2020 she was named to fill the post of Director of the new SD Veterans Cemetery in 2020. She oversees the daily operation at the cemetery; including burials, ceremonies, and keeping all grounds maintained.

            During her speech she made special mention of the excellent relationship the Veterans Cemetery has enjoyed with Post #23.

            “We love you guys, you’re amazing!” she said.

            Indeed, there are now several members of the post whose final rest is the SD Veteran’s Cemetery. Brown told the assembly that since last Memorial Day, more than 530 veterans had been laid to rest in the SD Veterans Cemetery.

            Her message was also quite good, that though it might not be appropriate to wish someone a Happy Memorial Day, as it is a time for remembering our nations fallen heroes, it’s more that okay to enjoy yourself with your family and friends.

            “That precious time, enjoying a barbeque dinner with your family and playing with your kids, that’s what their sacrifice bought us,” Brown said. “That’s the freedom and joy they fought for, and it honors them. That is the finish to their unfinished work, that the living love and care with each other. And yes, to enjoy some fun and play time too.”

City transfers liquor license from Smith to Austin, votes to increase natural gas capacity

            On Wednesday, May 24, the Garretson City Council met in special session. With only three items on the agenda, it was a short meeting, but the council had to make two important decisions, one of which was to accept an offer of extra capacity for natural gas.

            The first item was the transferring of a liquor license. As of today (Thursday), LeRoy Austin has officially taken ownership of Big Ern's Sports Cabin from Ernie Smith.

            When questioned if the name would stay the same, Austin replied, "It'll stay the Sports Cabin until it's no longer there." Austin plans to build new on the land at some point in the future, but final plans had not been confirmed to the Gazette as of press time.

            The council voted unanimously to transfer the license to Austin.

            Mayor Greg Beaner then brought up natural gas.

            "[Clayton Energy President] Bill Lindley said there was an opportunity for increased capacity," Beaner told the council. "It doesn't come up very often." Mayor Beaner outlined the notes from Lindley, stating that its common practice for the community to have enough capacity to be able to meet peak needs during the winter.

            "In essence, it would mean we'd never go over capacity and would never have to worry about peak pricing," said Beaner. "It would help as we continue to grow."

            The one-time charge for the increase would be $347,000, and would increase Garretson's capacity by 175,000 decatherms, bringing total capacity to 713,000 decatherms.

            During the meeting, the council discussed with Lindley the increased cost of natural gas transmission, as Northern Natural Gas had requested a transmission price increase from federal regulators that started in January, on top of the increased cost of the gas itself. While the full amount that was asked for was not granted by regulators, they did receive a partial increase.

            Lindley pointed out that many companies are updating pipelines and transmission lines that were installed in the 1940's, but when put on top of the increased cost of natural gas, the sticker shock has been tough for consumers.

            Adding to this, many communities have been short on their capacities, including Garretson.

            "It's a very unfortunate situation," Lindley said by phone to the council. "Natural gas prices were low for so long, and these ethanol plants have chewed up the excess capacity... pipelines have filled up because natural gas has been the fuel of choice against the price of propane. Now, you're short, and the 175[k] that you need to acquire, just covers the day you had on December 22, 2022."

            On a peak day last season with -15 degrees Fahrenheit and 50 mph winds, Garretson went through 715,000 decatherms, according to Lindley.

            "All cities should have enough to cover their peak days," Lindley said. "It's just unfortunate that there's construction costs along with it."

            "With all this infrastructure growth...along with the campaign that seems to be going along with eliminating natural gas...if the gas companies want to increase capacity but the government is saying to cut use, how does all this fall together?" asked councilor Bruce Brown, referring to the recent laws passed by New York and several cities in California, which prohibit or discourage natural gas installation in new buildings in an attempt to reduce fossil fuel use.

            While Lindley didn't want to make any guarantees, he said that he sees natural gas continuing as the fuel of choice for a long time, especially in the Midwest. He also pointed out that it was for new construction, not existing properties.

            "My concern is that it starts out as that, but it moves on to, well, you're going to have to pay this much more if you want this or else you can do this," said Brown.

            Lindley said that while those are "concerns that are out there," he does not foresee that for South Dakota unless it changes for the entire country, in which case everyone would be dealing with the issue.

            "I'm trying to help cities get to where they need to be," Lindley said, as part of his final selling point to encourage the council to increase the capacity.

            Mayor Beaner asked Finance Officer Paetyn Dreckman if the city had the finances to cover the one-time charge. She stated they didn't, but she pointed out that the price was extremely fair, and was worried the city wouldn't receive a capacity increase at that good of a cost again. She continued by saying the costs would be made up quickly, and the city did have the cash on hand to cover it.

            "I'm just concerned that we really don't have much choice," said councilor Bill Hoskins. "If we're gonna grow to the south, I think that we need to do it."

            Mayor Beaner agreed, pointing out that "kicking the can down the road" would only increase scope and costs.

            With that, the council voted to accept the capacity increase and after looking at the Annual Report for 2022, adjourned for the evening.

A blast from the past, from the corner of 4th St. and Main Ave., 1916 to now

            Pertinent History: With Big Ern's Sports Cabin changing hands, we thought it would be good to look back at the history of one of the oldest buildings in Garretson.

            What is now the Sports Cabin was moved in from Palisade, you can see the old bank building (now the museum) just down the street as reference.

            According to the Garretson Centennial book, the first known use of the building was a hardware store, owned by Gus Oldre. In 1909, he began an implement store in the same building. It has changed hands and been several different businesses since then, including a stint as the Garretson Post Office from the 1930's to the 1960's, at which time it was converted to a restaurant and tavern.

            In 1961, Bernard and Lucille Locke began B's Place, and in 1972 it changed hands to Walt and Bette Bauman. In the 1980's it was purchased by Tom Willems, then Tom Godbey, then Bob Olund, before being purchased by Ernie Smith, who crafted it into Big Ern's Sports Cabin.

Work on River-Ridge/Palisades State Park road begins!

            As follow-up to last week’s article about the Palisades township road to the State Park and River Ridge Golf Course, our editor attended the township informational meeting that was held at the River Ridge clubhouse on May 24th.

            “This project was a long time coming and had a lot of bumps in the road,” Oran Sorenson said. “And yes, to that pun. And we hope the wait is going to be worth it. We’re still going to push for an exit-only road from the State Park as they finish their expansion, as we love and support our local businesses and community. That said, it will be another year at least that our road will be the only entrance into the State Park. They’ve got a lot of work going on out there right now and there is much more to come.”

            Craig Nussbuam took the floor and let people of the township know what to expect during the construction. As we reported last week, traffic will be limited to single-lane only from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., typically Monday through Friday, with Saturdays if needed as the project goes on and depending on weather factors, but never on Sunday.

            Maintaining the road will be the priority and the township board will have to stay vigilant as cracks and faults appear. But with good maintenance, they’re confident the road could be maintained for the long term, perhaps even 30 years.

            A few other items were mentioned in the meeting. Jodi Larson, USPS rural mail carrier who also lives on this road, told the gathered citizens that mail delivery will continue as usual and as best they can during the construction.

            “If I can reach your mailbox, I’ll do my best to get it to you and not interrupt any service,” she said. “If the mailbox or road is inaccessible we will hold your mail at the post office or you can have your mail placed on hold. We’ll do our best to work with you while this project is going on.”

            There were other concerns regarding the state of culverts along the road, and the board was both aware of the concerns and as the contractor is working on the roads, so they will be checking them for stability and functionality as the project goes on.

            Another topic that was discussed was a change in speed limit. The town board asked the gathered citizens about resetting the speed limit to 45 or even down to 35 mph. Generally, the people expressed their support for a lower speed limit. Likely, if the board decides to change it, they will have another meeting about the topic.

Letter to the Editor: Garretson Pool

            Markell Gnadt's letter to the editor in the May 18 issue of the Gazette was well written and exactly on point.    Having been on the pool board in the past I know how much time and effort goes into operating the swimming pool, the last thing I wanted was to insult the board or imply that all there is to running the pool is "hiring guards", the pool board was and still is crucial in helping the city to get the pool up and running, and I hope they will continue to provide guidance.

            Volunteers are the lifeblood of a small community, thank you to the pool board and anyone who volunteers their time and energy, you are all very much appreciated.
