GHS Football broke in the brand-new turf on the Athletic Complex on Saturday, Aug. 12 against Colman/Egan at the Football Jamboree scrimmage game.
“Great day for it,” said Head Coach Jerry Weiland. “Good to get the boys out here and playing against another team in the pre-season.”
“Boy-O-boy are we excited about this new field,” said Assistant Athletic Director Kevin Steckler. “She might just be one of the newest and best fields in the state now. If you take a fall out there, it’s a real soft bed to land on.”
When asked if he’d taken his shoes and socks off to walk on it, Steckler admitted that yes indeed he had. “I sure have, and it was really nice.”
Supt. Guy Johnson was also very happy with the new field.
“Originally the concrete walkway was not on the bid, but we fixed that and still managed to come in only 6 thousand over-budget, which is amazing when you take into account the scope of the project and rising costs,” he said. “Handling big budget projects like this, that low closing cost adjustment rarely happens, and I know our athletes and parents will appreciate the quality of work that was done out here. It’s second to none in my opinion.”
On Tuesday, August 8, three Garretson youth were at the Sioux Empire Fair to compete in Barrel Racing, a rodeo event. Lacey Lumpkin, Serie Risty, and Madison Waltman all raced their horses, Bert, Pete, and Jake, around barrels in a cloverleaf pattern, attempting to gather the fastest time out of all competitors.

"1D, 2D, 3D, 4D groupings are based on time," said Patrick Waltman, Madison's father. "You take the fastest time of the event and from there, you get your groupings (Ds). Groups are typically done in a .5 sec./.5 sec./ 1 sec. split." For instance, if the fastest time was 17.000 seconds, the groups would come out as 17.000 to 17.500 for 1D, 17.501 to 18.001 for 2D, and so on.
At the Sioux Empire Fair, Risty placed second in group 2D while Lumpkin placed 5th in group 4D. M. Waltman had a No Time.
The week's competitions weren't over yet. On Friday, the three competitors headed to Edgerton for the Diamond H Acres Barrel Race. While Pete and Risty took it easy in competition due to a recent injury in Watertown at the State High School Rodeo, Waltman placed 1st in group 3D for the open division and 1st in the 2D youth division. Lumpkin placed second in group 3D in the open division and 2nd in group 3D youth division.
On Saturday they traveled to Pipestone and participated in the Pipestone Smoking Barrels Race. This is a series of scheduled races to gain points for end of season awards.
In the first run barrels, Waltman placed 2nd in the 3D Open division and 5th in the 2D Youth Division, Risty placed 13th in the 3D Open division and 9th in the 4D youth division, and Lumpkin had a No Time.
In the second run barrels, Lumpkin placed 2nd in the 4D and Waltman placed 7th in the 4D.
Risty then competed in Pole Bending, which is weaving a horse through six poles, timing the horse and rider for agility and speed. She earned 3rd in the 1D grouping.
PIERRE — The South Dakota High School Activities board of directors has a couple of new goals for the new school year as well as some goals that have been held over from last year.
One new goal is to form a committee to study the eligibility of athletes that transfer from one school to another. SDHSAA Executive Director Dan Swartos said during a board meeting Tuesday there has been a disturbing trend of “super teams” being formed through athlete transfers.
Another committee will be formed, Swartos said, with the goal of looking at ways to recruit more athletic coaches. He said the committee will look at ways to work with South Dakota universities and the state Department of Education. The association will also continue its goal of trying to recruit more officials.
SDHSAA will continue to work on organizing an economic impact study. Swartos said gauging the economic impact of state events could lead to contracts for hotels or meals during state events.
Emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship is another goal held over from last year. The association will continue the effort “to clean up behavior at our events,” Swartos said.
Two other holdover goals are the work of a calendar committee which will study when events are held during the school year and a classification committee which will study how decisions are made about placing schools in the right classification to ensure fair and safe competition.

A confluence of events resulted in a rather unique parade last Friday when two separate enthusiast groups crossed paths in Garretson; the Garretson City Council voted to keep the Sheriff's budget item as is after a long debate; a Garretson foreign exchange student who went through the shelling of her hometown in Ukraine was helped by a prom date she met while here; and ready or not, here it is- the start of fall sports; plus more!

Constance “Dellene” Dubbelde, age 86, of Garretson, SD, died Wednesday, August 10, 2023, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD.
Friends and family are invited to a time of visitation Tuesday, August 15, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Minnehaha Funeral Home in Garretson, SD.
Private family inurnment will take place Wednesday, August 11th at the Stordahl Lutheran Cemetery near Dell Rapids.
Constance “Dellene” Nelson was born to Emory and Gudrun O’lea Gran Nelson on August 27, 1936 in the hospital at Dell Rapids, South Dakota. Dellene spent her youth on farms near Baltic, Dell Rapids, Garretson and Sherman, South Dakota. She attended elementary school in Sherman and high school in Garretson, South Dakota, graduating in 1954.
Dellene met Rodney Dubbelde in 1952 when he was home from the Korean war. They were married August 7, 1954, and moved to a farm near Chester, South Dakota. They had five children, Julie Ann, twins Kathleen Mary and Karen Marie, Jane Louise, and a son, Thomas Rodney.
In 1961 Rodney and Dellene moved their family to a farm near Sherman, South Dakota where they had milk cows, chickens, pigs and crops. Dellene had a large vegetable garden to freeze and can for her family. She also loved flower gardening and had many wonderfully scented antique roses. She always shared bouquets of flowers with her mother and friends.
When the Palisade Manor nursing home opened in Garretson, Dellene worked there for ten years. She enjoyed the company of the elderly who lived there. She had a good life on the farm after she retired from the nursing home.
Dellene had a love of dolls and restored many different kinds of dolls for friends and family. She took the antique dolls, made clothing for them and repainted faces and fixed their hair. She also made cloth dolls, rag dolls, handkerchief and pillowcase dolls.
Dellene is survived by her husband, Rodney; daughters Julie (Jim) Winterton; Kathy (Gary) Winterton; Karen (Paul) Koch; Jane Dubbelde; and son Thomas (Jeannie) Dubbelde, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers Richard and Douglas Nelson.
This week, EROS Data Center celebrates its 50th Anniversary. The United States Geological Survey (USGS)-run center, which is situated just a few miles west of Garretson, has provided a source of pride, employment, and interest for the town since 1972.
"An original purpose of the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center, 50 years ago when the facility was planted in the middle of farm fields, was to store and send out land remote sensing data to anyone in the world with an interest in using it," wrote Michelle Bouchard of EROS' communications and outreach department.
Since its inception, EROS has used satellite data to monitor weather and climate changes, forest fires, the impact of drought, and much more. It now holds one of the largest image archives in the world, consisting of 73 petabytes.
For reference, 1 petabyte is one million gigabytes (GB), or the equivalent to 250,000 movies.

When the USGS first proposed having a fixed-orbit satellite in the late 1960's, it was determined the geological center of the United States would make for the best placement. Senate Minority Leader Karl Mundt and Representative Ben Reifel, both of South Dakota, lobbied and helped to secure funding for the center to be placed near Sioux Falls. The ingenuity of Sioux Falls business leaders ensured that it came to fruition.
